Did you ever notice that every disaster movie begins with the scientist being ignored?
Not much interesting happening in Australia, the new cases per day is so low at the moment, when you consider the below is for Australia wide, and Victoria is only a fraction of the 19 new cases nationally.
Total number of active cases are at around 1090 now
With the world almost at 2,988,945 total confirmed cases, and 1,906,776 still active. I don’t think we are returning to international travel any time soon. Right now the places to watch are the biggest economy in the world which is the US and what is happening there because that will have a flow on effects into our own economy and they are at 810,968 active cases, with 55,357 people have died. We’re at 94,341 active cases there still, with 22,614 have died.
ScottyFromMarekting has released a contact tracing app. From the comments, he seems to have lost the trust of a large majority of the people. For a different perspective here’s Alex Gladstein the Chief Strategy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation on everything wrong with digital contact tracing app. Anyway good luck to those people who wish to have more surveillance in their life, you keep your own beliefs and don’t impose them on me and we will get along fine.
Look at these terrorists, sitting on a roof sipping a cold beverage. Absolutely terrifying! Also, the american’s are at it again. Other parts of the world are not having any of that.
Hope everyone is going well with homeschooling and not feeling like this (sing along if you know the words!). Otherwise this creepy lady will take responsibility for you. Someone’s kids declared war on them.
Anyway you can check out the sources that I use for yourself to find the stats that interest you.
https://ncov2019.live/ – For world stats
https://www.covid19data.com.au/ – For a detailed breakdown of Australian data
https://covid-19-au.com/ – The interesting thing here is that here’s a map for location breakdown in Australia
The interesting thing about these sites is that they are built by individuals, or groups of individuals in collaboration. It is generally open source or released under creative commons. So it doesn’t come from any corporation, media outlet, or authority figure. Innovation often happens at the fringe where permission is neither sought or requested. People just build.
Day 45 in lockdown
Markets
In case you missed it, oil was the big news last week. I woke up and the spot market was at $0.01, and the futures market was at negative $37 USD, yes negative. The news blew up in all my feeds. With no one driving, no one flying, all storage exhausted, demand just dried up. What a time to be alive..
Round 2, of the conversation between Chamath Palihapitiya and the CNBC presenter, I think CNBC should stop inviting him back because CNBC gets destroyed every single time.

If you are wondering where I get my market charts from. I use Tradingview, you can create a free account. It’s not a broker, it’s actually a social media platform, but the Full featured chart is soo good. It also comes as an app on your phone. It gives you the ability to create a watchlist and with everything from bitcoin, Ethereum, gold, US dollar currency index, oil futures, S&P 500 volatility index, etc. It’s got candlestick charts, and lots of TA items that save on your chart.
News sources
The problem we have in Australia is that we are not well informed and just follow the narrative of mainstream media or the words of so called authority figures. And the quality of news you get from news.com.au and standard newspaper is they are there designed to get CLICKS. It’s click bait, irrelevant news. At no point in my life have I ever cared what prince harry is doing for instance, because it doesn’t personally affect me.
So, I ask that you socially distance yourself from mainstream media, specifically Australian mainstream media. You are not more informed from going there. You actually become more stupid, and then I have to talk to you, so you can see my pain. You can use a browser extension like RescueTime to block yourself or limit it to 15 mins per day which gives you enough time to read the headlines.
My thesis is that no one person or organisation has the complete picture. Look for interesting people with interesting opinions, with opinions that are different than your own. It’s important to understand their base frame of reference as it provides context. And always DYOR.
Here’s some of my personal news sources (you don’t need to use it, find your own), you should create a folder in a browser of your own, then you can just right click on the folder and ask your browser to open all in a new window.
Twitter – It’s where all the interesting news and people are. Where else can you engage in a discussion with the top medical researchers, talk to some of the top thinkers in the investment space, the bitcoin space, and just generally find out what’s happening in the world, what PEOPLE are talking about. And not what media organisations want you to read. It’s probably the only useful social media. Facebook is where I run ad’s, and to connect with people for your past, linkedin is facebook for the unemployed, while twitter allows you to connect with people from your future.
Zero Hedge – Give you an alternate view of the world away from the mainstream narrative, sometimes it’s controversial.
ABC News – It’s probably one of the better places to get news in Australia that’s not too click baity.
Feedly – This is an aggregator site that takes in RSS feed and give you news on specific topics that you might be interested in.
Hacker News – Hard to describe, but it’s brought many interesting articles and commentary from people over the years, it’s sort of like the new slashdot (if you use to read slashdot in the days)
BusinessInsider – Generally not too bad, can sometimes contain junk news
TechCrunch – Tech news
Techmeme – More tech news.
Hacker Noon – more tech focused news
Product Hunt – Where i go to find the latest new products, what others a building out in the world. It’s where I first found out abt Zoom (I’ve been using it for over a year now), and also meistertask that some of you now use.
Europe 1 – Yes i read french news, helps me find out what’s going on at home. And it’s almost 100% more informative than Australian news sources. Also it aligns to my goals for this year.
Le Monde – More French news
Le Figaro – More French news
Discord – It’s kind of like mIRC from 20 years ago, mixed in with slack channels.Just something new I found, and it’s been interesting.
If you have time, here’s an interesting documentary that’s free from Michael Moore – Planet of the Humans.
